People are making a massive leap. They use ChatGPT to write an email or automate a spreadsheet task, and suddenly they think: "I can build software now."
No. You can't.
And the gap between those two things is going to cost a lot of people — and a lot of companies — a tremendous amount of money, security, and trust.
The Leap That Breaks Things
Let me be clear: AI is extraordinary. It's genuinely transformative. I use it every day. My team uses it. We're building it into client projects. This isn't a "technology is bad" rant.
But there's a dangerous assumption taking hold: that because AI can generate code, anyone can now build production software.
That's like saying because you can use spell-check, you can write a novel. Or because you used TurboTax, you can be a CPA.
Software development isn't just about writing code. It's about:
- Architecture — structuring systems that can grow and change
- Security — protecting data and preventing exploits
- Scalability — handling 10 users vs. 10,000 users vs. 1 million
- Maintainability — building something someone can actually update in six months
- Testing — making sure it works under real-world conditions
- Deployment — getting it live without breaking everything
- Compliance — meeting HIPAA, SOC 2, GDPR, or industry-specific regulations
AI can help you write functions. It can generate boilerplate. It can even suggest architectural patterns if you prompt it well.
But it won't tell you what you don't know to ask. And that's where everything falls apart.
What Actually Goes Wrong
Let me give you real examples of what I'm seeing — not hypotheticals, but actual patterns showing up in the wild.
1. Security Vulnerabilities Everywhere
A marketing director builds an internal dashboard using AI-generated code. It works! People can log in, see data, generate reports. Ship it.
Three months later, someone realizes: there's no rate limiting on the API. No input validation. User passwords are stored in plain text. The authentication tokens don't expire. SQL injection is trivial.
The AI gave them code that "worked" — but it didn't build in any of the security layers that a professional developer knows to add by default. Because the prompt didn't ask for it. Because the person writing the prompt didn't know those things existed.
Now they've got user data exposed, potential regulatory violations, and a complete rebuild ahead of them.
2. Technical Debt That Compounds
AI-generated code often takes the path of least resistance. It works for the immediate use case. But it's not built to last.
A startup founder builds an MVP entirely with AI assistance. It's fast! It's exciting! They get their first 100 customers.
Then they need to add a feature. The code is a tangled mess. There are no clear module boundaries. The database schema made sense for version 1 but doesn't accommodate anything new. There's no documentation. There's no test coverage.
Every change breaks something else. They hire a developer to help. That developer looks at the codebase and says: "We need to rebuild this from scratch."
The technical debt accumulated so fast that it's cheaper to start over than to fix it. That's not a success story. That's an expensive lesson.
3. Scalability Walls
AI can help you build something that works for your team of five. But what happens when you have 500 users? Or 5,000?
I've seen AI-generated apps that make 47 database queries to load a single page. That's fine when it's just you testing it. It's a disaster when you have real traffic.
Performance optimization, caching strategies, database indexing, load balancing — these aren't things AI automatically builds in. They're things experienced developers know to consider from day one.

Software isn't write-once. It's a living thing. APIs change. Dependencies get updated. Security patches are released. Bugs surface.

They failed. Badly. Data wasn't properly encrypted. Audit trails were incomplete. Access controls were insufficient. They had to halt all sales and spend six months rebuilding core infrastructure to meet HIPAA requirements.
That's not just expensive. It's existential.
Why AI Is Amazing (For The Right Things)
None of this means AI is bad. It's incredible. Here's what it's genuinely great at:
- Accelerating experienced developers — writing boilerplate, generating test cases, suggesting refactoring patterns
- Learning and exploration — helping developers learn new frameworks or languages faster
- Code review assistance — catching potential bugs or suggesting improvements
- Documentation — generating API docs or explaining complex code
- Prototyping — quickly testing ideas and approaches
AI is a powerful tool for people who already know what they're doing. It's a productivity multiplier for developers.
But it's not a replacement for software engineering discipline.
The Right Way To Use AI for Software
If you're a business leader or entrepreneur who wants to build software, here's the honest path forward:
1. Know what you don't know
Software development has depth. Acknowledge that. You wouldn't build your own accounting system or represent yourself in court. Software is a specialized skill.
2. Use AI to prototype and explore
Want to test an idea? Build a quick prototype with AI. Show it to potential users. Validate the concept. That's a great use case.
But don't confuse a prototype with production software.
3. Hire professionals for production systems
When it's time to build something real — something customers will use, something that needs to be secure and reliable — bring in experienced developers.
Let them use AI to work faster. Let them use it as a tool. But let them make the architectural decisions, implement security properly, and build something maintainable.
4. Invest in quality from the start
Cutting corners on software development creates debt that compounds. It's always cheaper to build it right the first time than to rebuild it later.
5. Partner with AI-savvy developers
The best developers right now are the ones who know how to use AI effectively while still applying engineering rigor. They're faster, more productive, and deliver better results.
That's the winning combination.
The Bottom Line
AI has lowered the barrier to entry for software creation. That's mostly a good thing.
But software creation and software engineering are not the same thing.
Anyone can generate code. Not everyone can build a system that's secure, scalable, maintainable, and compliant with regulations.
The biggest mistake I'm seeing right now is people confusing the two.
If you're using AI to automate tasks, generate content, or explore ideas — fantastic. Keep doing that.
If you're using AI to build software that people will depend on — that handles sensitive data, that needs to scale, that has to be secure — please, bring in professionals.
AI is a tool. An amazing tool. But tools don't replace expertise. They augment it.
The companies that understand that distinction will build great things. The ones that don't will learn expensive lessons.
